Accra-Tema train service resumes operation

The shuttle service between Accra and Tema is back, after nearly two years of suspension, following a derailment at the Tesano rail station.

The service which was to have started two weeks ago, was postponed due to activities of encroachers along the rail lines.

The actual reconstruction of the 24 kilometre Accra-Tema rail line began in 2004 to help reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

The Railways Development Minister, Joe Ghartey was joined by colleague ministers, railway company officials, dignatries and the media, Tuesday, January 29, 2019 took a trip from the Accra terminal at Kantamanto to Tema and back to Accra.

Those on the train were, senior government officials, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Chief Executive officer of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Black Stars Coach Kwesi Appiah, and some Traditional rulers.

The reintroduction of the service offers convenience to patrons, jobs for scores of young people and eases traffic.

Some dignitaries and journalists who made the trip for the first time said it was a great experience and very convenient.

They commended the Railway Ministry, the Ghana Railway Authority for ensuring the coaches are back on the tracks.

Train passengers had a free ride and this will continue for two weeks.
