Pedestrians using the Madina Highway in Accra continue to abandon the use of the footbridges citing the length and nature of access ramps on the bridge. Series of highway knock-downs have been experienced on the Adentan stretch of the busy road, resulting in the death of some pedestrians.

This has led to a spontaneous reaction by irate youth in the area who resort to demonstrations including blocking the highway and burning of tyres to draw the attention of government to their plight. After the construction of the bridges two years ago pedestrians continue to use the main road at the risk of their lives.

The abandoned footbridges on the Madina Adenta route have been overtaken by beggars. Other people have also started using the place as a dumping site. Many drivers on the route have described reasons by pedestrians for not using the footbridge as misplaced. Some time ago the military and police were dispatched on the road to ensure pedestrians use the footbridge but that has not yielded any results.

Meanwhile, a driver on the Madina route expressed worry about the continuous flouting of traffic rules and non-usage of the bridge. He said they continue to put their lives at risk if they continue to use the road instead of the footbridges. He called on the authorities to institute punitive measures to ensure the pedestrians use the footbridge.

Passengers, drivers and other personalities using the Madina Highway appeal for the construction of a footbridge for easy access to cross the road. It has been over a year since the footbridge has been completed, but pedestrians are not making use of it. They lamented bitterly about the length of the bridge and it looks like the staircase to heaven thus make it uncomfortable for easy access. They risk their lives to cross the dangerous Highroad and they are sometimes knocked down by the incoming vehicles.
