Parliament has approved a significant reshuffle in Ghana’s delegation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, replacing Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin with his deputy, Patricia Appiagyei. This move has sparked controversy and debate.
The reshuffle has drawn criticism from some MPs, particularly Dominic Nitiwul, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, who accused the Majority Caucus of acting unilaterally and failing to consult the Minority on the changes.
“The leadership should not be moving motions and asking the House to make decisions that they should be taking and bringing to us,” Nitiwul argued.
However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga defended the decision, stating that it followed established parliamentary procedures.
Mr Ayariga explained that ECOWAS parliamentary roles are typically assigned to deputy leaders of Parliament, making the current changes consistent with tradition.
The new appointments have been approved and are expected to take immediate effect.
