The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is offering another opportunity to high-potential African researchers in climate change to pursue post doctoral courses in their areas of research.

The course will be ran under Climate research Alumni and Postdocs in Africa, CLAPafrica.

Announcing the course at an event in Accra, the Head of Scholarship Programme, German Academic Exchange Service, Cay Etzold said climate change amplifies the challenges facing Africa countries in the attainment of the SDGs.

This therefore calls for further training of young researchers at the Postdoctoral level to help in policy formulation to address climate issues which need urgent action.

The German Ministry of Education and Research has already trained about 300 African climate researchers under the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change Adaptation and Land-use, WASCAL in ten beneficiary countries.

WASCAL Alumni with their PHDs will support other researches through networking with guidance from German mentors.

The Executive Director of WASCAL which is headquartered in Burkina Faso, Dr. Moumini Savadogo said the institution is leading in the provision of climate change services to protect and improve livelihoods across the sub-region.

He mentioned the educational programme of WASCAL which is eleven leading Universities in Africa researching into cutting edge issues on climate change.

Dr. Savadogo said WASCAL has provided UN Convention on Climate Change with climate researchers who are now focal persons for the convention in their countries.

WASCAL project is a large-scale research-focused programme initiated to develop effective adaptation and mitigation measures to climate change.

It operates in ten West African countries including Ghana, Mali, Senegal and the Gambia.
