AGRF launches report on digitising Agric sector

The Digitization of African Report on Agric sector 2018- 2019 indicates that farmers get access to tailor made information that allows for optimum production.

It also enabled farmers to gain access to appropriate products and services that increase yields from 50-300 percent and increase incomes from 20- 100 percent.

The report which was launched at the African Green Revolution Forum revealed that despite the potential turn around for farmers to propel development, its usage among women was low.

Key findings of the Digitization of African Agricultural report included the reach and growth of digital sector to nearly 60 percent among farmers in nearly three years, how economies are improving, its high usage of more than 70 percent among the youth, the drawbacks and recommendations for improving agriculture on the continent.

The technologies are targeted at resolving issues of advisory services, market linkages, financial access, supply chain management and micro agricultural intelligence.

Launching the report, the Director of the Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation, CTA in the Netherlands, Michael Hailu said the report painted a positive picture, that digitization in the agricultural sector is the future for growth for the continent.

He noted that without the right policy focus and investment, there was the danger that development in the agric sector would be piecemeal.

The President of the Alliance for Green Revolution Africa, Dr Agnes Kalibata was optimistic that digitization in the agricultural sector will be the game changer for the continent’s development.

The CEO of Samba Food, Leticia Osafo-Addo acknowledged the importance of digitization in her agro- processing company, through which she has created more jobs.
