Akosombo Dam Spillage: Farmers in Pru East District of Bono affected; Thousands displaced, farmlands submerged

Farmers along the Upstream areas of the Volta Lake in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region are reeling from the effects of the spillage from the Akosombo Dam, with hundreds of hectares of farmlands and communities submerged.

No life has been lost, but rice, maize, millet and Cassava farms have been completely wiped out and affected farmers and residents are at their wit’s end. The situation, in these communities has been compounded by torrential rains.

More than two thousand residents living along the banks of the Volta Lake and Island communities in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region have been displaced by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams coupled with the torrential rains.

Food stuffs, classroom blocks and churches are partially or completely destroyed by floodwaters.

The spillage has also submerged several acres of farmlands.

Communities that barely exist include Ganakpe, Accra Town, Vutideke, Fante-Akuraa, Jaklai-Adiemmra, Konkomba and Saho-Akuraa.

The hardest hit communities are Vutideke and Fante-Akuraa.

Vutideke, a farming community.

Residents of about 700 have been completely wiped out.

Toilet facilities, CHPs Compound, basic school and boreholes have also been submerged.

Businesses and daily activities in the affected communities are on hold.

The flooding situation has compelled the ECG to shut down its power supply to the Vutideke community.

The displaced residents are living in tents.

GBC News was told that some families numbering more than ten and have no relatives to live with in Yeji or adjourning communities are living in make shift structures.

Some of the displaced victims at Vutideke spoke to GBC NEWS could not hide their plight as they looked distraught.

At Fante-Akuraa, about 800 residents have been displaced.

The Fante-Akuraa D/A Primary School is submerged.

Churches and electricity poles have also been affected.

Some school pupils who spoke to the news team sent a plea to the government to come to their aid.

Some residents including nursing mothers say they feel neglected.

The NDC’s Pru East Parliamentary Candidate, Mr. Emmanuel Boam, who has toured the area in the past two weeks appealed to the government, philanthropists, FBOs and individuals for support.

Major bridges and roads linking the affected communities to the district capital have been washed away by the floods.

About twelve Island communities in the Sene East District have been affected by the floodwaters.

The news team gathered that the MP for Pru East, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, who is currently outside the country on parliamentary duties has also donated 50 thousand Ghana cedis through NADMO to purchase relief items for the flood victims.
