Akua Denteh

The 90-year-old Madam Akua Denteh was lynched on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality.

Tamale High Court has sentenced two women to 12 years imprisonment each over the murder of Madam Akua Denteh, the 90-year-old woman, who was murdered over witchcraft accusations.

The convicts, Hajia Serena Mohammed, and Latifa Bumaye, were convicted on each of the two counts of manslaughter, and the prison terms are to run concurrently.

The convicts attacked and killed the 90-year-old woman at Kafaba, in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region in July 2020.

Meanwhile, Lamanatu Adam, the Executive Director, for Songtaaba, a think tank that works to eliminate illiteracy and empower women in the Northern Region says ”there is the need to strengthen the protection mechanism at the Community level”.

This, she said, is critical to eliminating the abuse meted out to Ekua Denteh. Madam Adam cited the example where the entire community stood by and watched on when Ekua Denteh was lynched for being an alleged witch.

She expressed optimism that the protection mechanism is critical to eliminating the abuse of women.‘

”It is better to emphasize the need to work on practice of change,’’ she stated.

The Police declared five persons wanted when Ekua Denteh was lynched.

Two are to spend 12 years in prison, while three persons are still on the run.
