Residents of Amoma in the Kintampo South District of the Bono East Region threaten to vote against the government if  road is not fixed.

The Chiefs and people of Amoma in the Kintampo South District of Bono-East Region have made a passionate appeal to the Government and the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Amoako-Atta to get the deplorable road linking the Town to the Techiman-Kintampo Highway constructed to give them some relief.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, they stressed that currently life, especially during the rainy season is unbearable due to extreme muddy conditions and then in the dry season unbearable dust takes over.

They maintain that the situation is negatively affecting accessing healthcare, notably by pregnant women in labor and in the transport of farm produce to market centers.

Lack of good roads in the rural areas of Ghana is a major problem the Country has been grappling with.

The challenges presented by these bad roads make life terrible for dwellers of rural Communities along them. The transportation of farm produce is one area worst affected. Amoma in the Kintampo South District of Bono-East Region is the latest to make their voices heard on this vexed issue of bad roads.

The community which has a population of over 5,000 people who are mostly farmers. A walk on the 4 Kilometers road from the community to the Kintampo-Techiman Highway reveals how bad it is, justifying the outcry for it to be improved.

The deplorable road which also links Amoma and Ofuman, 13 kilometers away, is crucial because the area produces Cashew, Yams, Maize, and Cassava among others.
But the nature of the road makes life difficult for the inhabitants when they try to seek proper medical care, with the worst affected being pregnant women.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Ghana, the Chief of Amoma, Nana Amoateng Ameyaw said, the road was given out on contract over a year ago but the contractor has not been seen on site since.

According to him, he has personally gone to President Akufo-Addo to be given the contract as he is a contractor himself but it proved futile.

Nana Amoateng Ameyaw consequently called on the Minister of Roads and Highways to go to their aid.

The Assembly member for Amoma East Electoral area, Johnson Antwi for his part said, they have been to the office of the Department of Feeder Roads in Sunyani but nothing came out of it.

He said due to the bad nature of the road, ladies in the community even find it difficult to attract prospective husbands.

“Because of the bad nature of the road, the ladies in here are not even getting men to marry,” he lamented.

Mr. Antwi stressed that if the road is not fixed, it will be difficult for the government to get a single vote in the 2020 general elections.

“We are waiting for President Akufo Addo to come and construct our road for us because he is the first gentleman of Ghana, if he fails to get our road fixed then we would vote against him hands down in the 2020 general elections”.

Interacting with  Radio Ghana some drivers said plying the road is a challenge, especially when it rains. A driver said, a pregnant woman nearly died in his car due to the bad nature of the road.

“About three months ago, I took a pregnant woman in labor to a hospital in Techiman in my car, if not by the intervention of GOD she would have died on the road,” Abdullai Kabori said.

He added that regular break downs of their vehicles and accidents are rampant.

Some of the farmers who spoke to Radio Ghana said, due to the bad state of the road their farm produce mainly, yam are being left rotten in the bush.

“We are hardworking farmers but after producing food stuffs we don’t get access roads for vehicles to convey our produce to the markets especially to Techiman Central Market,” they lamented.

When contacted, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Amoako Atta said, his ministry is working on constructing all roads in the country.

Efforts to get the Contractor and the Feeder Roads in the Bono Region proved futile as they declined to comment on the issue.
