The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the unlawful possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs at Asanso, near Bekwai, in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on January 26, 2026 while driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718–25. He was intercepted by a police team on snap-check duty at the Asanso checkpoint.

A search conducted on the vehicle uncovered nine nylon sacks concealed in the bus, containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs. Upon further inspection, the sacks were found to contain a total of 713 compressed slabs of the suspected substances.

Police say the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000 to avoid arrest, but the offer was firmly declined by the officers.

The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, as police work to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other individuals connected to the offence.
