Asiri chief grateful to government for water system

The Chief of Asiri in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region, Nana Asiri Kwagyan, has expressed gratitude to government for the completion of the Small Towns Water System.

He said provision of pipe borne water will speed up development in the Asiri area through the eradication or minimization of water borne diseases and infant mortality while improving life expectancy.

Nana Asiri Kwagyan was speaking when members of the Parliamentary Committee on Works and Housing paid a courtesy call on him as part of a four day tour of rural water systems in the Bono and Ahafo Regions.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing led by its Chairman, Nana Amoako and Ranking Member, Kwasi Bedzra are in the Bono Region to inspect Water Treatment Plants and Small Water Systems.

The first day saw them visiting Asiri and Jankufa in Jaman North, Berekum Municipal and Nsoatre in Sunyani West. In Jaman North, of interest was the Small Town Water Systems at Asiri and Jankufa. Both towns are benefitting from the Additional Financing for Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project.

Asiri has a population projected to hit just over 7000 by 2029 with water demand estimated to be 563 Cubic Metres per day. It’s water system which is 98 percent complete, has two mechanized boreholes powered by both solar and electricity from the National grid as well as an elevated 100 Cubic Metre Tank concrete water tank.

Currently the system is being tested with eight standpipes provided for the people. Meanwhile registration of private customers is ongoing for connection of water to homes, when the facility is fully completed.

The project started in 2015 and is estimated at nearly three million Ghana Cedis. Neighboring Jankufa has a similar design water system but with smaller capacity.The Jankufa system will serve a projected population of almost 4000 with a daily water requirement of 277 cubic meters per day.

The facility which is also 98 percent complete is valued at just over One point seven million Ghana Cedis with six standpipes serving the people for now.

The MPs’ of the Select Committee on Works and Housing toured the two facilities before interacting with the Chiefs.

Addressing the Committee, the Chief of Asiri, Nana Asi Kwagyan was full of gratitude, saying potable water will give a boost to cleanliness and improved health of his people.

The Chairman of the Select Committee on Works and Housing, interacting with both Chiefs, said underlying their efforts is achieving SDG Goal Six (6) on clean Water for all and effective sanitation.

The Parliamentary Select Committee also stopped at the Berekum Water Treatment plant which extracts water from other surface and underground sources for water production.

The Parliamentarians learnt that the System produces about 800,000 gallons per day for the Berekum Municipality with a population of about 122 thousand.

The last point of call on the first day was Nsoatre in Sunyani West.

The Community is served by a single Mechanized Borehole which produces about 220 Cubic metres per day which is pumped into an overhead tank and supplied to the Community.
