The Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Police Command has called for a temporary halt to the firing of muskets and other gunshots in Bunkpurugu Township.
In a letter dated August 11, 2026, and signed by the District Police Commander, ASP Emmanuel Kofi Sintim, the Command asked chiefs, elders, assembly members, community leaders and residents to suspend the practice during funerals, celebrations and other public gatherings until further notice.
According to the Police, the directive was necessitated by growing concerns over public safety, accidental shootings, loss of lives and the prevailing security situation in the area.
The Command acknowledged that musketry is part of the cultural tradition of the people and has long been used to mark ceremonies. However, it stressed the need for restraint at this time to protect lives.
Specifically, the Police said the firing of gunshots at funerals had been suspended with immediate effect and urged traditional authorities, families and the general public to comply with the directive.
The Command also warned that anyone found using or possessing firearms in violation of the directive would be arrested and prosecuted.
The Police said it was counting on traditional leaders and the media to help sensitise the public about the temporary ban.
The suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
