The People of Mamprusi in Bawku have marked Damba, one of the renowned festivals celebrated by the descendants of Na Gbawaa in Northern Ghana.

There was a rich display of culture at the festival, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Mohammed. It was also to signify unity, cooperation and coexistence amongst the indigenes.

While commemorating the birthday of the Holy Prophet of Islam, Mohammed, the actual content of the celebration glorified the Chieftaincy institution.

Damba festival is in effect a thanksgiving festival and a time for families to meet, and socialize. It is also for auditing and evaluating the past and planning for the future.

At the durbar grounds, most of the people, particularly the affluent in society, rode horses to display their culture, values, and heritage for admiration, tourism, education and advocacy. They display horse riding and dance skills while the farewell and thanksgiving continued into the night.

Speaking with GBC News, a Legal Practitioner and an Opinion Leader in the Mamprusi Community in Bawku, Mohammed Tahiru Nambe, said peace is an enabler to enhance development and that all must give peace a chance.

He urged the people to do away with division, because that would retard development in the area

Mr. Nambe said it is important for everyone to remain undivided, because it could create a platform to strengthen the bond between them and promote unity.

The Mamprusi youth in Bawku’s speech was presented by Awudu Karim Ibrahim. It highlighted the need for the youth to safeguard peace.

The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Amadu Hamza, again pledged government’s readiness to be innovative in reducing poverty among residents. It was a joyful reunion for sons and daughters of Mamprusi.
