Both factions involved in the long-standing Bawku conflict have openly declared that they are “one people” with “no reason to be at war,” during a final mediation meeting chaired by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

‎The meeting held on December 1, 2025, brought together representatives of the Mamprusi and Kusasi sides, marking the last stage of the Asantehene’s months-long effort to help resolve the Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

‎Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of the Tarana Traditional Area, led a 30-member delegation on behalf of the Naayiri, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, Overlord of Mamprugu. Representing the Bawku Naba, Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, was a delegation led by Naba Tambis Baalug, Paramount Chief of Pusiga. Hon. Cletus Avoka spoke for the Kusasi group, while Dr. Issah served as spokesperson for the Naayiri’s delegation.

‎After spending several months meeting both groups separately, Otumfuo brought the two sides together to speak directly to one another in what he described as a final attempt to find a lasting solution to the tensions in the Bawku traditional area.

‎The discussions were peaceful and respectful, with both delegations stressing that they share a common identity and should not be fighting each other.

‎His Majesty commended the groups for their maturity and encouraged them to prepare their followers to embrace lasting peace. He reminded them that regardless of the final decision, they must continue to live together as brothers and sisters.

‎The Asantehene announced that he will present his full report and recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days, expressing hope that the President will quickly convene a formal meeting to communicate the next steps.
