The Tema branch of the Ghana Beauticians Association(GHABA), has organised a traditional day to showcase the rich Ghanaian culture.
The beauticians dressed in unique Ghanaian hairstyles and dresses displayed varieties of Ghanaian foods representing some tribes in Ghana.
Madam Catherine Woode, President of the association said the event organized annually was to celebrate Mother’s Day and African Union Day.
She said the various kinds of food were prepared by the beauticians according to their tribes, to also demonstrate their abilities as women to project their traditional cultures through their handiworks.
Traditional Foods displayed included Ampesi with Kontomire and garden egg, stew, fufu and light soup, which is associated with the Akans; Akple and Okro soup by the Ewes; TuoZaafi by the Northern community; and Kenkey with pepper and fried fish by the Gas.
Madam Woode explained that they normally put on African wear because most Ghanaians had adopted the western culture and neglected the African culture, “this is the time to go back to our roots”.
She added that Ghanaian dressing was unique and that each dress or cloth had its own name and meaning and urged the public, especially the youth to patronize more of the African dresses, and hair products than that of the western culture to publicize and know the quality of locally made products.
