The General Agricultural Workers Union, GAWU has expressed displeasure at the selection of winners and the prizes given at the annual Farmers Day Awards.
General Secretary of the Union, Edward Kareweh said the cash prize given to the overall best farmer and other incentives given to other award winners, do not enhance productivity among farmers. Speaking to GBC News on this year’s Farmers Day Awards, Mr. Kareweh said awards given out should be able to meet the production needs of farmers.
”There is still concern about the way the awardees are selected and the awards given to the farmers are not appropriate….the awards must lead to Agricultural enhancement because the purpose of the award is to encourage them to do more. Cash prizes are not the way to go and should be discouraged. It could be both cash and other relevant items,” the General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union, Edward Kareweh said.
