Bird Flu outbreak: Four Regions on red alert

The Greater Accra, Volta, Central, and Ashanti Regions have been put on red alert over the outbreak of bird flu.

As of the 31st of last month, more than 33,000 birds have died from the flu. This was made known to GBC NEWS by the Deputy Director of the Veterinary Services Department, Dr. Darlington Owusu.

He explained why the flu has been recorded in other parts of the country despite the fact that it has been contained in the four regions that are now on red alert.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Greater Accra Regional Chapter of the Poultry Farmers Association, Gifty Rudor has attributed the spread of the bird flu to other regions, to unwillingness of poultry farmers to report cases of the disease on their farms to the Veterinary Services Department.

Madam Rudor said the issue can be resolved if government commits to pay compensation to affected farmers.
