The Accra Metropolitan Assemble says bodies of persons who died from infectious diseases including COVID-19 are strictly handled by a medical officer or an authorized health officer and not families of the deceased.

A statement signed by the Public relations officer of the AMA, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, says this is in accordance with section 10 clause 2a and b of the Public Health Act., 2012 (ACT 851) which stipulates that “A Medical Officer or an authorized health officer may (a) determine the manner in which the remains of a deceased person is to be disposed of (b) authorize the disposal of the remains of a deceased person in a specified manner whether or not the deceased person is in and infected area.

If the medical officer or authorized health officer is satisfied or has reason to believe that the remains of the deceased person is likely to be an agent in the transmission of communicable disease”.

The AMA is encouraging all stakeholders to adhere to the laid down protocols to ensure the safety of all to prevent the transmission of any communicable diseases.
