Six persons including a middle aged woman, Mrs. Bernice Wireko, drowned in River Ankonim at Adagya in the Bosomtwe district of the Ashanti region last night.

The deceased were in a Hyundai Avante salon car when it was swept away by the river which had burst its banks following a downpour.

Bodies of five of the occupants were retrieved at about 2 am friday dawn, while the other person, George Oppong Wireko, said to be in his early 50s, was found in the morning after frantic search by local divers.

Meanwhile, the National President of the Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals, GISEP, Nana Amihere has blamed the sad deaths of the six persons on ignorance.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, Nana Amihere said lack of sensitisation and negligence could also be a huge contributory factor to the needless deaths of the six in the River Ankonim at Adagya in the Bosomtwi district.
