As part of efforts to keep Bolgatanga clean and instill the habit of good sanitation practices among the citizenry, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly in the Upper East Region has undertaken a clean-up exercise across the Municipality.
The clean-up exercise forms part of preparations towards the 62nd independence celebration slated for March 6th, 2019. It was part of measures instituted by the Municipal Assembly to ensure that the environment was clean, and encouraged good sanitation and good hygienic behaviours and attitudes among the people in the Municipality.
The exercise started around 0600 hours at the Bolgatanga Jubilee Park with stakeholders in sanitation and refuse management particularly the Zoomlion Ghana Limited, officials from the Municipal Assembly,  the media among others.
The major places of focus were the choked gutters around the Bolagatanga Township, streets, both old and new markets, the lorry stations and parks, residential compounds and other public institutions.
Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana on the sidelines of the exercise, the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Joseph Amiyuure, who took part in the exercise explained that the exercise was in line with government’s vision of ensuring safe environment and the adoption of good sanitation practices.
He said the exercise was also an indication that the Municipal Assembly placed emphasis on environmental health and sanitation issues in the Municipality and was committed to meeting the sanitation needs of the people.
The MCE stated that a clean environment had the potential to prevent diseases such as cholera, malaria, typhoid among others and called for collective efforts from residents in the Municipality to ensure that they fully participated in the exercise and future ones for a conducive environment.
Mr Amiyuure, however, regretted the indiscriminate disposal of waste in the Municipality and called for attitudinal change towards waste management and disposal.
Mr. Amiyuure called on stakeholders to join hands on deck to keep the Bolgatanga Municipality clean at all times. He said stores operating along roads should ensure that gutters in front of their stores are clean. He warned that  anything contrary, such stores will be locked up by the Assembly Sanitation Task Force.
Mr. Amiyuure called on residents in the Bolgatanga Municipality be law abiding citizens to avoid any inconveniences.
