Residents of Bongo have marked this year’s Ghana Independence Day with a mix of celebration and mourning. The death of the District Chief Executive for Bongo cast a shadow over the celebrations, leaving many residents in a state of sorrow. As a result, the day was observed with reflection and grief across the district.
Twenty-one contingents made up of schoolchildren from both public and private institutions marched in a colourful parade to commemorate the national event. Despite the festive atmosphere, the occasion was also solemn as the district continues to mourn the passing of the Bongo District Chief Executive, Joseph Abaah, who died a few days ago.
Many dignitaries at the event wore black attire as a sign of respect. Schoolchildren also used the occasion to pay tribute to the late DCE, acknowledging his contributions to education and development in the district.
“Bongo has had DCE’s but you were exceptional despite your short stay in the office. We can’t question God but our prayer is that may your gentle and lovely soul continue to rest in the bottom of Abraham.”
The Member of Parliament for Bongo, Lawyer Charles Bawa Duah, reflected the plans he has already had with him to transform Bongo and its surrounding communities.

“Joseph Abaah Akaseke committed his life to youth leadership. Especially, he was determined to improve the condition of the youth. I had discussions with him on how we can contribute to improving education in the District. We had lots of plans but we have lost him.” Lawyer Bawa Duah narrated, while announcing the introduction of an award scheme aimed at recognizing hardworking staff of the Ghana Education Service in the district.
Addressing the gathering, the Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri urged residents to recommit themselves to the national values of discipline, hard work, patriotism, and service to the nation.
The Independence Day celebration ended with a renewed call for unity and dedication to national development, even as the district continues to honour the memory of its late Chief Executive.
