Book on traditional medicine launched

The Centre For Plant Medicine Research in collaboration with the Catholic University College of Ghana, Fiapre has launched a book titled ” Traditional Medicine in Ghana “.

The book which was authored by the acting Executive Director, Centre For Plant Medicine Research, Mampong Akwapem, Dr. Kofi Bobi Barimah and a renowned Author, Okyere Bonna, gives holistic and relevant information about Traditional Medicine in Ghana with a focus on best practices in traditional health systems and policies around the globe.


In the book, “Traditional Medicine in Ghana”, Dr. Bobi Barimah and Okeyere Bonna examine the practice, problems and prospects of traditional medicine in Ghana with a focus on the best practices in traditional health systems and Policies across the Globe.

The experiences of the authors in advocating for the inclusion of Traditional Medicine in the mainstream Ghanaian health care system are also highlighted. The launch which is the 3rd in series, was attended by Academicians, Government officials , Religious leaders, Traditional rulers, Students and a section of members from the General Public.

Speaking to the GBC on the Sidelines of the event, Dr. Kofi Bobi Barimah the main brain behind the publication is to clear the misconceptions people have about traditional medicine.

Recounting the challenges he and his co-author encounted while putting together the piece, Dr. Bobi Barimah said scouting for information on the subject from the appropriate quarters was a nightmare but with determination, they managed to gather enough for the write up.

Over the last few years, Ghanaians have been concerned about the safety and efficacy of traditional medicine. In view of this, a Traditional Medicine Practice Council has been formed to regulate the practice in the country and this the Authors believe would help  eliminate the quacks in the health care delivery system.

The Vice Chancellor of  the Catholic University College of Ghana, Fiapre, Prof. Daniel Obeng-Ofori launched the book with a call on all to inculcate the habit of reading so as to broaden their knowledge base. The first copy of the Book was sold at One thousand cedis, (1,000ghc).
