The National Food Buffer Stock Company has debunked claims that it is substituting mackerel for locally produced eggs in its supplies to Senior High Schools across the country.

NGO Africa Education Watch had claimed that the National Food Buffer Stock Company had increased its supply of Chinese imported mackerel to schools ignoring eggs from poultry farmers in the country.

Chief Executive Officer of the Buffer Stock Company, Hanan Abdul- Wahab told Journalists in Accra that the assertion is false. He insisted the supply of eggs is not within the mandate of his office.

In a related development, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, MoFA says the “worrying” concerns about the lack of demand for eggs from local poultry farms will receive Inter-Ministerial attention.

Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Bagbara Tanko said it is a source of worry to the Ministry, and assured Ghanaians of an urgent resolution.

Meanwhile, the Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana says the Ghana School Feeding Programme, GSFP has indeed imported some Chinese mackerel as a replacement for eggs.

According to sources, the School Feeding Programme says eggs purchased from the Association are expensive.

Chairperson of the Greater Accra Regional Association of Poultry Farmers, Gifty Rodor told GBC NEWS that their investigation reveals that the Ghana School Feeding Program has given the go-ahead to some companies to import mackerels and sausages to feed the children.
