Burma Camp’s new Signals Training School commissioned

By Juliet Mettle-Edmonds

The German Armed Forces Technical Advisory Group has handed over a 2-floor New Signals Training School to the Ghana Armed Forces at Burma Camp in Accra.

The Signals Training School will enhance training and capacity building in modern military communications.

The Signals Training School traces its origin to the Gold Coast Wireless Company, which was part of the Colonial Force in the then Gold Coast. During the 2nd World War, the wireless company participated in the war in a support role and subsequently became a training squadron.

After Ghana’s Independence, the Gold Coast Wireless Company was reconstituted as a Signals Training Squadron for personnel on military communication.

It became the main communication training Institution for the military and other Security services until it was renamed Signals Training School. The school in the past operated in a wooden structure until 1999 when it was demolished to pave the way for the construction of a new block.

Today, the new 2 -floor complex has 5 classrooms, 3 laboratories for drones, cyber and radio, 2 workshops for telecommunication and electronics, an electronic warfare classroom, a library, an auditorium for 100 persons, 13 offices for school staff, 2 server rooms, a storeroom, and a roof training area with attached 30m high radio transmission tower among other facilities.

The Chief of Defence Staff Vice Admiral Seth Amoama commended GAFTAG for the Centre of excellence to train signalers in the Force.

Lt. Col Bernd Frei is the Head of Mission of German Armed Forces Technical Advisory Group (GAFTAG).

Germany’s Ambassador to Ghana Mr. Daniel Krull said Ghana remains Germany’s premium partner in West Africa and commended the country for the rule of law and respect for human rights.

The Deputy Minister for Defence Mr. Kofi Amankwah Menu called on the Signals Training School, the Department of Defence Communication and Information Systems and the Ghana Armed Forces Training and Doctrine Command to develop strategies to ensure optimum use of the facility to enhance training in cyber and electronic warfare which is crucial in fighting terrorism and other forms of modern warfare.

The partnership between the Ghana Armed Forces and the German Armed Forces Technical Advisory Group has over the years resulted in significant landmark projects.
