Residents of Sahara, a suburb of Dansoman in Accra are complaining about the poor state of roads in the area.

They say whenever it rained, their streets got flooded making movement very difficult.

They called on the government and authorities of the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly to take proactive measures to save life and property, considering the number of school children within the area.

Josephine Akari reports that rain can be a source of blessings to residents, especially in an area, where it clears dust from the atmosphere and cools down the temperature.

However, for residents of Sahara, a suburb of Dansoman, anytime the clouds gather, they hope that it does not rain, to save them from flood situations.

For school children within the area, it is a sorrowful sight to see them wading through the flood waters, praying not to be carried away in the floodwater.

“I witnessed one of them falling in the flood. As she got up with the help of her friends, she expressed worry that waters could have been from the gutters of which she had fallen into’’.

The residents complained bitterly about their plight.

“Whenever it rains, the whole place gets flooded. We have a lot of schools here, including the School for Special Needs, Dansoman Cluster of Schools, New Century among others. When these children close from school, they take off their shoes and walk through the flood. Last year, we were told the Assembly is refurbishing all roads in Dansoman, all roads surrounding us have been refurbished with the exception of that of Sahara. They keep giving the excuse that the closed junction here will be opened and the gutters will be reconstructed but it all lies. The state of our roads is in a deplorable state. If other adjoining roads have been fixed, then for the sake of the school children within this enclave, Sahara roads must also be fixed”, a resident stated.

“We have stayed here for so many years. Whenever it rains it enters every house and movement becomes very difficult. The MP for this area is aware of the situation but has not attended to us”, another resident stated.

A student said but for the timely intervention of his friend, he would have been drowned.

“We are pleading with the appropriate authorities to construct big gutters and drains. If not for my friend who alerted me to step at a particular place, I would have been swept off by the floods”, a student lamented.

An Elderly, resident said though, with the help of other residents, they petitioned the authorities about their woes, and nothing had been done to fix the problem.

“For about 12 years now, the roads have been in a very bad state. We wonder why the roads have been fixed in other parts of Dansoman but that of the Sahara has not been fixed. Some people collect debris from their building and dump them here to help the situation. We petitioned the authorities about the situation some time ago, but nothing has been done about it”, the Senior Citizen pointed out.

As the rains continue, it is expected the authorities of the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly would take prompt measures to save the situation, to prevent the loss of precious lives.
