Calm returns to Kenyase after Security Operatives clash with Illegal Miners

Calm has returned to Newmont Gold Corp Ghana at Kenyase in the Ahafo Region days after clashes between suspected illegal miners attacked security men, injuring four and killing one person.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, PRO of Newmont Gold Corp Ghana, Agbeko Azumah said although work has resumed in earnest, the security situation will be reviewed later Monday, July 29 to ensure safety of all.

Mr. Azumah expressed condolences to the family of the deceased Security Man, Stephen Amankwah, 44, for their loss. He assured the public that even though no arrests have been effected, the police are investigating the matter in order to bring the culprits to book.

A security contractor died, and four others injured in a violent confrontation with illegal miners around the Ahafo mine of Newmont Goldcorp Ghana at Kenyasi in the early hours of Thursday.
The security contractors of Propea Coin, a security service provider for Newmont Goldcorp Ghana were patrolling concession of the Ahafo mine, when they sighted the illegal artisanal miners on the concession.
