Radio Ghana was among fifty-three individuals and organizations honoured last night by the Catholic Standard newspaper at its 80th anniversary awards ceremony in Accra.

The coveted award went to Christ the King Parish for being the best promoter of the newspaper. Other award winners include leading vendors, advertisers staff, columnists and former Editors of the newspaper.

The immediate past Chairman of the National Media Commission, Nana Kwesi Gyan-Appenteng, recalled the gallant role played by the Catholic Standard in the 1970’s during the heady days of the Acheampong regime saying the newspaper was the must read and model of journalism at the time.

The Archbishop Emeritus of Kumasi Rt. Reverend Peter Akwesi Sarpong said freedom of the Press does not mean anything including articles that tarnishes other people`s image. He urged the media to promote the virtue of truth based on objective facts.

The Board Chairman of the Catholic Standard, Sir Samuel Asubonteng highlighted the way forward for the newspaper. Other award winners include Professor Nana Essilfie Conduah, Professor Kwesi Yankah and Sir Crystal Adjirakor of Crystal Television.
