The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail of GH¢1 million with two sureties. He is expected to appear in court today, October 7, for the commencement of his trial over alleged illegal mining activities.
This follows his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on October 6, as ordered by the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Chariman Wontumi is facing charges relating to alleged illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to him. His appearance comes after months of investigations into the company’s operations.
The Attorney-General had previously warned that if Chairman Wontumi failed to report to the CID, an arrest would be ordered. Speaking last week during a forum with civil society organisations, the Attorney-General confirmed that the charges had been completed and signed.
“The charges against Wontumi and Akonta Mining have been signed. He should be here on Monday. If he doesn’t come by Monday, I will order his arrest, and his charges will be read to him,” Dr Ayine stated.
Chairman Wontumi, who was accompanied by his lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, commended the CID and the Attorney-General’s office for what he described as their professionalism.
He confirmed that the charge involved mining without the necessary licence and indicated that the matter would be dealt with in court.
Mr Wontumi is expected to appear in court today, October 7, for the start of legal proceedings.
