A survey conducted by the National Development Planning Commission, (NDPC) has revealed that children top the list Ghana’s population demographics who are at risk of being left out in the development process. This is followed by the aged with the unemployed placing third on the list.

In view of this, the Minister for Planning Prof George Gyan-Baffour has called for public policy to be more responsive to the needs of children. Prof Gyan-Baffour was speaking at the National Technical Review Meeting on Inclusive Growth in Accra.

The 2019, edition of the review focused on the prospects for child responsiveness and the way foward.Stakeholders at the forum highlighted the need to examine how responsive national development has been to children issues in a bid to leave no child behind, as Ghana marks 30 years of signing and ratifying the UN convention on the rights of the child.

The Acting Director for the Development Policy Division of the NDPC, Dr. Felix Addo-Yobo said the survey concluded that Food and nutrition and education were the top two issues hindering the inclusion of children in the development process.

“Children came in strongly, the aged, unemployed and under-employed people, workers in the informal sector, persons with disability, girls and women…..we need to address the issue access to food and nutritional, education access to health services and online protection”

The Minister for Planning Prof Gyan-Baffour said inequality remains problematic despite strides made in dealing with it.

Inputs from participants at the forum will be included in a report which is expected to be presented to the Presidency.
