Experts in construction have attributed the collapse of the Church of Prosperity building at Akyem Batabi in the Eastern Region to structural defects and weak or poor monitoring by regulatory institutions.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, the Technical Lead on Built Environment at the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS), Samson Deklu, tasked the building inspectorate division to up their game of ensuring that buildings under construction meet the required standards to forestall future eventualities.

“Clearly it might be a structural issue that occurred over a period of time because we have learned that the building has been there uncompleted for the past 20 years ago. So definitely, some structural issues might have happened.”

Mr Deklu said builders who do not employ the services of construction professionals do so at the expense of their safety.

The five-storey church building belonging to the Church of Prosperity collapsed at Akyem Batabi in the Eastern Region, trapping some worshippers on Tuesday afternoon.

About 65 worshippers were in the building at the time of the collapse.
