Coalition expresses worry over mining activities in Atiwa Forest

A Coalition of NGO’s against mining in the Atiwa Forest, has expressed worry over the commencement of mining related activities in the forest.

According to the group without Strategic Environment Assessment, the people whose livelihoods depend on the forest will be violated. Also, the real environment impact will not be known.

At a news conference in Accra, spokesperson of the Coalition, who is also the National Co-ordinator of Arocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, said government has violated the forest Act of 1927, the county’s Guidelines Regulating Mineral Exploration in Forest Reserves and other international treaties that Ghana has ratified.

The group expressed has reservations about the President’s assurance that better technology will be used without disturbing wildlife in Atiwa.

The Coordinator of KASA Initiative Ghana, a member of the Coalition, Jonathan Gokah called for broader consultation with communities in the affected areas.
