Some residents of Keta, Ketu South and surrounding areas affected by the recent tidal waves are kicking against the construction of a sea defense in those areas. This is because a sea defense, when constructed will impede fishing which is the main occupation of the people in these areas.

The residents say their plight has shifted from the destruction caused by tidal waves to flooding as a result of water oozing out of the ground into their homes. One of the residents in Kejikpoe Dr. Olympio Attipoe proposed some solutions to GBC News.

”Now the tidal waves is no longer the issue its water from the ground and it’s because the ground is saturated as a result of activities of the sea….the sea has to enter the lagoon but right now there is space is no longer there so the only place the sea can pass through is underground and thus the whole Kejikpoe town is affected”.

In a response, the Volta Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Letsa advised against sand mining in the affected communities. He said experts are on the ground to collate such concerns and proffer the necessary solutions.Dr. Letsa said relief items have been mobilized from NADMO in Accra and will be transported to the victims later.

”One thing I know which the people must stop doing is the sand winning along the coastal areas. It’s very serious and we must try to control it…..we have people on the ground who will assess the situation and advise for remedial action to be taken so we want to reassure the people in the region to tell us what the challenges are for the technical people to look at it and advise us”, he noted.
