Communications Ministry commits to fight cyber crime

The Ministry of Communications says it is working on a draft legislation to fight cyber crime.

Sector Minister, Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful, said the legislation will help address some weaknesses, such as mobile money fraud and social media scams identified in the country’s cyber crime laws. This will help to make provisions for appropriate sanctions.

She was speaking at a Conference in Accra  on Technical Implementation of the Budapest Convention which seeks to address Cyber Crime .

The Minister of Communication, Ursula Owusu Ekuful disclosed that about four hundred thousand scam messages are blocked daily by telecommunication companies from reaching targeted phone users in the country. This is one of many issues such as mobile money fraud and social media scams the Ministry has to deal with in an effort to deal with cybercrimes.

Opening a two-day Conference on Technical Implementation of the Budapest Convention in Accra, the Minister said her outfit is in the process of reviewing Ghana’s cybercrime Security Policy and Strategy to ensure strategic document to guide the country’s cyber security development.
