Coronavirus: Ghana closes schools, bans public gatherings

President Akufo-Addo has ordered the shutdown of all schools and universities indefinably as government moves to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

All public gatherings including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, sporting events and religious programmes such as services in churches and mosques have also been suspended for four weeks.

The President gave the order in a televised address Sunday, March 15 night.

Earlier, the Ghana Health Service announced that four new cases of corona virus had been recorded, increasing the number of confirmed cases to six within a period of less than 48 hours.

Although educational institutions are being closed, pre-tertiary students that have already registered for basic and secondary school exams will be allowed to attend revision classes.

Other measures announced include a travel ban on countries that have reported more than 200 cases.

In the televised address President Akufo-Addo added that the Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo, will place emergency legislation before Parliament to help enforce all the measures announced.
