Court grants UMB ‘hackers’ GH¢ 4.8 billion bail

The men who allegedly hacked into a Universal Merchant Bank account at Airport city, Accra have been granted bail with a total sum of GH¢ 4.8billion by the Accra Circuit Court.
They were granted a 400 million cedis bail with four sureties with one to be justified.
The court also ruled that foreigners among the accused persons should deposit their passports and an identity card at the registry.
Ten suspects were earlier arraigned before the court presided over by Jane Quay last week but two others have been added to be twelve.
They have all pleaded not guilty to the offence of stealing and conspiracy to steal.
The twelve are alleged to have hacked into the accounts of Universal Merchant Bank at Airport City, Accra and stolen 326 million cedis.
The twelve include James Akwesi Kwarteng,Paa KwesiAdokwei, Joseph Kofi Owusu, Ernest Acheampong, Stephen Kofi Tampori, Michael Nana Ya and Joseph Marinoni.
The rest are: Chief Kingsley Oboefe,Good luck,Evans Sellasie Ettoh and Rahman.
The Prosecution told the court that, the accused persons hacked into the bank’s accounts on the 22th of July,2018 after they opened 18 bank accounts all subscribing to Visa services.
According to Prosecution between 22nd and 23rd of last month at midnight, the accused persons with six others who are at large, hacked and transferred more than 300 million cedis.
In the same period about 278 thousand cedis was withdrawn using Visa cards and through mobile money.
The bank noticed the theft and blocked the VISA withdrawals of the suspected accounts.
The accused persons following their inability to withdraw, went to the banking hall to cash some monies and were arrested.
The case has been adjourned to the 28th of this month for trial to continue.
