COVID-19: Consume locally grown food products to build immunity- Ghana Health Service

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is advocating the consumption of locally grown food products as a measure to build immunity against the Coronavirus. It said most locally grown fruits, vegetables and other staples contain adequate amounts of essential vitamins that assist the body fight diseases.

Addressing the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs at Wa, the Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Aboagye Dacosta said although the active cases of the Coronavirus keep dropping nationwide, there is the need to sustain individual and government efforts towards containing and preventing the transmission of the disease.

Ghana recorded the first 2 cases of the Coronavirus in March this year. The country has a cumulative case count of 46,060. The active cases stand at 466 with 303 deaths.

According to the Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Aboagye Dacosta attributed the reduction in the number of active cases to the coordinated measures put in place by government.

Dr Dacosta was however worried that as the cases dropped, the adherence to the social health protocols also drop. He called on the traditional authorities in the Upper West Region to assist health professionals in sensitizing residents on the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As chiefs, we must actively engage our community members with the information we are sharing here [information about COVID-19]. It can be through house to house interventions. Some community volunteers can also assist government in executing this exercise,” he explained.

The Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Hadzide said government’s fight against the pandemic is hinged on 5 main pillars. Mr Hadzide said the measure taken by government will not have been successful without the support of Ghanaians.

The President of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton expressed gratitude to the President of the National House of Chiefs, Torbgui Afede for donating 50 thousand Ghana-cedis to the Upper West Regional Directorate to help fight CSM and COVID-19.
