The Government of Denmark has extended Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services with the provision of infrastructure in three communities within the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah who  inaugurated the projects, said the Government would ensure that the necessary partnerships are forged and existing ones strengthened to enhance the resilience of Ghanaians to public health outbreaks and to reduce the impacts of such outbreaks, with emphasis on ensuring equity for the most vulnerable.

In February last year, the Ministry for Sanitation and Water Resources and the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF with support from the Government of Denmark, launched a programme to extend Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services to selected health care facilities and schools in some Municipalities in the Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Areas.

The two areas were selected based on evidence from the Ghana Health Service that these were epicentres of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In consultation with the Ghana Water Company Limited, key vulnerable low-income communities from the Asokore Mampong, Kwadaso and Kumasi Metro within Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.

In the Kwadaso Municipality, three communities have benefitted from the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services programme.

A mechanized borehole has been provided for the Agric Nzema community to enable residents to easily access potable water.

At Apatrapa, the health facility has been provided a modern toilet facility.

At Ohwimase, the public basic school has been provided a newly built child-friendly sanitation facility.

The learners can study of in a conducive environment as they will no longer need to worry how they will meet nature’s call.

A ceremonial inauguration of the projects was held at Ohwimase, during which dignitaries present commended the Government for moving closer to reaching the Sustainable Development Goal 6.

The UNICEF Representative in Ghana, Anne-Claire Dufay highlighted the very good results and positive impacts of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services programme in three municipalities within the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.

The Ambassador of Denmark, Mr. Tom Norring outlined some of his government’s support towards Ghana’s justice delivery system.

He disclosed that they have procured and distributed 420 electronic tablets to the Ghana Health Service’s Community- Based Health Planing Services, CHIPS compounds for the E- tracker app. These tablets according to him, are used to improve Community Health information systems in seven districts in Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions.

They replace the big log books used by the Health workers and also assist with prompts for follow ups.

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah assured of Government’s resolve to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal for Water.

The Minister and her entourage also paid a courtesy call on Chief of Agric Nzema, Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo to announce some of the projects in his traditional area under the WASH projects.
