The Dansoman Circuit Court has discontinued the case against former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The court’s decision on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, paved the way for Ayitey Powers’ release after he had spent about a week on remand.
He was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he was alleged to have threatened the life of Mr Ampofo Ankrah.
His arrest followed a request by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged comments.
Ayitey Powers subsequently appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court on Wednesday, where the case was discontinued.
The reasons for the court’s decision to discontinue the case were not immediately made public.
