Dealers & Exporters of straw baskets appeal to gov’t for support

Dealers and Exporters in straw baskets in the Upper East Region want the government to regulate the sector through legislation.

They believe this will boost growth and prevent foreign intrusion.

For these workers, the basket business puts food on their table and keeps their families together. Hence the request for proper Control to prevent outsiders from muddying the waters.

Upper East Regional Correspondent, Samuel Ayammah, joins us from Bolga with some more details.

The main occupation of the people of Bolgatanga is basket weaving with majority of women involved in the business.

Some of their products are exported to countries like Denmark, Germany and Asia.

In an interview with Upper East Regional Correspondent, Samuel Ayammah, one of the weavers said they travel as far as to Kumasi to purchase the straw for their business. This he said affects the growth of their business.

He said financial challenge is another problem they face.

Another weaver who also spoke to GBC News appealed to the government to support them to purchase more materials for their business to enable them to make their products affordable.

He said if they get the needed support from the government just like cocoa farmers, it will go a long way to improve their standard of living.

He said basket weaving is the source of livelihood for most people in Bolgatanga.
