Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has tasked the security agencies to give prompt attention to complaints of death threats on journalists and use all legitimate means at their disposal to unmask the culprits who should be arrested and prosecuted with speed.

The Minister’s comments come after investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, complained of death threats on his life pertaining to his work.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah on his Facebook wall mentioned Captain Smart, Afia Pokua, and others who have received death threats.

He said Ghana’s enviable reputation as a protector of journalists’ rights and freedoms must be preserved.

The threat on Manassah’s life has been condemned by the GJA which called on the Police Administration to investigate the death threat.

Meanwhile, the National Media Commission (NMC) has asked journalists not to take death threats they receive in the line of duty lightly. The Commission says since such issues are becoming rampant journalists have the duty to be professional and always report to the NMC and the police for the appropriate action to be taken.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, Chairman of the Commission, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh called for proper investigation into such issues and persons caught dealt with by law.

Mr. Ayeboafoh asked journalists to be critical of the contacts used to issue such threats to help in tracking the culprits.

He appealed to mobile phone companies to cooperate with the relevant agencies regarding the registration of sim cards so that the culprits can be tracked in the event of any issue.
