Dedenu: Suspected outbreak of ‘foot and mouth’ disease in South Tongu

More than 200 cattle are reported to have been affected by a suspected outbreak of ” foot and mouth” disease at Dedenu in the South Tongu District.

So far one calf has been confirmed dead.

South Tongu District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jehadi Osei-Bonsu, who made this known said hundreds of cattle are undergoing treatment and observation following the outbreak and called for cooperation of all stakeholders to contain the situation.

He said the foot and mouth disease hardly kills, debunking rumours that about 30 cattle have been killed by the disease.  

Dr. Osei-Bonsu said though he is yet to get results from laboratory testing to confirm the disease, signs and symptoms show that it is “foot and mouth disease” which normally breakout in the dry season.  

cattle owner in the District, Pastor Sampson Klome said a large number of his cattle have been affected by the suspected foot and mouth disease yet none of them is dead.

He said veterinary officers are in the area to educate them on how to handle the situation.
