Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he describes as a reversal of its position on LGBTQ+ issues in Ghana.

He said the party had strongly supported the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill while in opposition, but appears to have shifted its stance after assuming office.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Focus on Wednesday, Dr Kissi accused the government of inconsistency, claiming it has failed to uphold its earlier promises to oppose same-sex marriage and strengthen laws against LGBTQ+ activities.

He further alleged that religious leaders in the country feel disappointed by the development.

“The NDC pushed strongly on LGBTQ+ issues, and I think they should bow their heads in disgrace. They have scandalised reverends, Muslim clerics, priests and bishops in this country. They pushed so hard to do what they said was right, only to win an election and then renege on their promise,” he said.

His comments follow remarks by President John Dramani Mahama, who indicated that the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is not a priority at the moment, citing other pressing national issues.
