The Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and Member of  Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei has stated that “disability needs not be an obstacle to success” as Ghana joined the rest of the World to mark The International Day of Persons With Disability today.

Making a statement of the floor of parliament in relation to The Day, The MP however, noted that, “currently, most of our disabled persons are found begging on the streets, living under poor conditions with limited access to social amenities. Persons With Disability in Ghana are often regarded as unproductive and incapable of contributing positively to the society”.

According to her, “we need to make a conscious and deliberate effort to bring all persons with disability into the developmental mainstream.

Also I believe it is time to come together to diffuse the attitudinal and physical barriers that inhibit the progress of issues relating to disabled persons for better inclusion and equal opportunity”.

In related development, MP for Krachi Nchumuru, John Majisi noted that, the Issue of social protection, is very critical in ensuring the inclusiveness of persons with disability.

He said, “Successive governments have endeavored to promote the right to social protection and social security for Persons with Disability.

Though some gains have been made in the provision of some social protection intervention: by various governments and non-governmental organizations, the time has eome for us to ensure that we adopt and implement measures that will guarantee the extension of social protection to all Persons with Disabilities.

Touching on the role of the Organizations of Persons With Disabilities Mr. Majisi stressed that, “it is important to state that the role of the Organizations of Persons with Disability is very critical in ensuring the empowerment and inclusion of its members in the mainstream society. The organizations have the responsibility of providing a voice of their own”.

Still on Disability Day, The MP for North Tongu and Ranking Member on The Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has proposed a 10% employment policy which will aim at ensuring that at least 10% of all recruitment into The Public service and Private Sector are revised for PWDs.

He said, “this 10% policy should also reflect within our internal political organization and must also guide political appointments by successive Presidents.

Our main political parties have Women organizers, youth Organizers, Zongo Coordinators but no Disability Organizers-this dos not promote inclusiveness”.

Any wonder that this house has no PWD as a serving MP, he asked.
