A national Standard Document to protect and ensure the safety of children on the streets and in various children’s homes, has been launched at the Osu Children’s Home in Accra.
The document which is in eight parts, will regulate residential homes for children, prevent unnecessary family child separation, and ensure that children found on the streets are not harmed or abused.
Launching the document, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, said it will provide guidance and different options for tackling the myriad of challenges facing children.
This initiative will regulate residential homes for children and promote family based care.
With funding from the United States Agency for International Development ( USAID), the development of social welfare will use the document to advance Ghana’s Care Reform Initiative.
During the launching, Mrs. Morrison said the document is to ensure that children are not abused but supported to achieve their dreams in life.
The document will regulate the procedure for adoption as well as the operations of Children’s Homes across the country.
She added that the document does not offer all answers but provides useful guidance and support to develop children’s potential.
