Driver killed in gruesome collision on Accra-Cape Coast Highway identified

Police have identified the deceased driver of the Kia Grand bird 48 Seater Bus involved in the gruesome accident that occurred on the Gomoa Mampong portion of the Accra –Cape Coast Highway.

He is Samuel Baah aged 45. Suspect driver in charge of a Yutong bus, also involved in the collision, Isaac Cobbina, aged 34 is reported to have turned himself in to the police. Police say he is currently assisting with investigations. The suspect was earlier sent to hospital. He was treated and discharged.

Preliminary investigations revealed that 13 females and 11 male passengers sustained injuries, and are currently receiving treatment at the Trauma & Specialist Hospital at Winneba.

Ten persons have been confirmed dead. According to Police, a Yunthong 33-seater bus with registration number GN 4741-10 was travelling from Takoradi to Accra, on reaching a spot at Gomoa Mampong, on the Winneba Junction-Kasoa Road, he overtook the vehicle in front and in the process collided with a Kia Grand bird 48 Seater Bus with registration number, GS 6262- 19, travelling from Accra to Elubo which was also overtaking traffic.

The front of the Kia Grand Bird Bus and the back of the Yutong Bus got damaged. Passengers on both vehicles sustained injuries and were taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba for treatment.

Doctors confirmed the dead-on arrival, which included Samuel Baah aged 45, driver of the Kia Grand bird 48-Seater Bus.

Meanwhile, Statistics from the National Road Safety Authority says road crashes have killed more than 1,000 people in Ghana, from January to April 2021.
