In what appears to be a show of support for the Ghanaian based Nigerian ex-convict, Victor Gbeyon Amegakpo whom the citizens of Dzita suspect to be the brain behind numerous murder cases in Dzita, a team of over 16 hooded police men armed to the teeth from the Volta Regional Command stormed Dzita between the hours of 1: 00am and 3:00am of Sunday September 22 and arrested two young men, Francis Adzorlolo and Henry Adzoko.
The manner of the arrest, attracted the townsfolks and the police sensing danger, drove off.
In the process, Francis Adzorlolo fell off with the handcuff from the bucket of the vehicle and sustained serious injury and the police did not stop to pick him up.
Despite the evidence provided to the police to the effect that Henry Adzoko was not at Dzita on that fateful day, May 24, 2019, the police continue to keep him in custody since Sunday September 22, 2019.
For the past few years, Dzita, a fishing community in the western part of Anloga in the Volta Region, has been bedeviled with over twenty (20) gory murder cases.
Most of the bodies discovered by the townsfolks either in the mangrove or shallowly buried at the seashore, were without vital parts.
This development has virtually placed the townsfolks whose livelihood depends on fishing and farming under perpetual curfew.
There had been series of demonstrations and petitions by the townsfolks to press on the Ghana Police Service and those responsible for the safe keep of the citizens to find those behind the killings of their loved ones and to bring them to justice but received no significant response, particularly from the Ghana Police Service.
In the early hours of the May 25, 2019, a moaning sound from a room belonging to Victor Gbeyon Amegakpo, forced some of the townsfolks to break in to ascertain what was happening.
To their utter shock, a middle aged mentally retarded woman was discovered tied up to a bed. In the process of rescuing this woman, the youth, vandalized the building and went further in search of Victor, and ended up vandalizing another building housing Victor’s mother.
According to some of the citizens, Victor has since fled from the town.
This recent arrest, according to the townsfolks, is a betrayal from the Ghana police service.
One of the citizens, Mr. Gabriel Gborgla retorted, “Over twenty human beings have been murdered and the police have been unable to make a single arrest.
A game resulted in arrest of an innocent boy who was nowhere near the crime scene. We are simply not safe”. Another citizen, Mr. Kofi Aklamanu who was visibly angry remarked “The police cannot continue with this lawlessness. They must be compelled to release the innocent young man”. The assemblyman of the area, Mr. Samuel Brass Dedzo, also registered his disappointment of how the police could come to a town to effect an arrest without any prior notice.
Meanwhile the chiefs and family heads of the town are calling on the citizens to remain calm as they work to have the boy released. ‘We are assuring you that at the end, good will triumph over
