E/R: Prison takes measures to curb spread of COVID-19

The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Prisons Service has instituted some measures to protect staff, inmates and visitors against the spread of the virus.

These include the provision of veronica buckets of water and soap at vantage points, hand sanitizers, limiting the number of visitors and conversation with inmates, suspension of group and church fellowship, as well as suspension of annual leave for health professionals among others.

The Second in Command of the prisons, ADP Joseph Asabre who made this known in an interview with GBC Sunrise FM, added that one prison cell has also been earmarked for new prisoners for a period of fourteen days before adding them to the main prison cell to ensure the safety of the inmates.

He further indicated that even though his outfit has not recorded any case yet, the inmates are screened vigorously by the health professionals in the prisons to curb the spread of the virus.

ADP Asabre also revealed that they have not yet received personal protection equipment being distributed by the government.

He, therefore, appealed to individuals and groups to support them with the necessary logistics like hand sanitizers and vitamin C supplements to help curb the spread of the disease.
