Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, has restored power to Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo Municipalities in the Eastern region.

Power was restored at about 4:25 pm Sunday, December 12, 2021, seven days after the entire area was plunged into darkness.

The restoration of power was greeted with spontaneous jubilation by residents.

Disturbances/Illegal Connections:

Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo Municipalities were plunged into darkness on Monday, December 6, following the decision by ECG to shut down the feeders to the Bulk Supply Point which supplies power to the two Municipalities.

ECG explained that the decision became necessary due to illegal connections by unscrupulous people to their transformers increasing the load.

The week-long power outage crippled the local economy as businesses including cold stores, welding shops struggled to operate.

MP for Yilo Krobo intervention:

The MP for Yilo Krobo, Albert Nyarkotey facilitated stakeholders meetings between ECG, the Traditional authorities in Yilo and Manya Krobo as well as the youth where some far-reaching resolutions were arrived at in the interests of the Krobo Customers and ECG.

The meeting resolved that ECG workers shall have access to the company’s installations and meters in the communities as well as the homes of customers without obstruction from anyone. That, no individual or group shall attack any ECG installations be it transformers or meters within the affected areas. That, a Technical team from ECG together with a team of both the MP for Yilo and Manya would visit the affected sites of damaged ECG installations to assess the extent of damage. ECG shall immediately begin repair works on all broken/damaged installations to restore power to the affected.

IGP Warns

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has early on advised residents of Lower Manya Krobo and Yilo Krobo Municipalities to desist from acts of vandalism and live in peace with officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana.

Speaking after visiting the two Municipalities with some Police Management Board Members, Dr Dampare called on the youth to put a stop to their intended actions as the Police are on standby to deal with anyone who will be found culpable.

The IGP added that should the youth fail to heed his caution, the Police will do everything within their power to prevent any disturbances.
