The ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, Baba Gana Wakil says the successes chalked up by Ghana in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic puts her second to South Africa for countries on the continent that have had better responses to the pandemic. He made the comments at the Annual Meeting of ECOWAS National Offices in Accra.

Representatives of 14 countries in the sub-region are in Accra for a 3-day meeting which will focus on the response by member states to the coronavirus pandemic. This is due to the impact the virus has had on world economies especially Africa.

Speakers at the meeting applauded the leadership of ECOWAS for selecting a topic that is of relevance to all member states. The 2020 edition of the meeting was initially scheduled to take place in Togo but was later changed to Ghana.

“Ghana happens to be the Secretariat of the African Free Trade Area as well as the Chair of ECOWAS Ghana. Ghana happens to be one of the countries doing very well with her response to covid-19, in fact, Ghana is only second to South Africa in that regard. For that, I think that all attention is focused on Accra for this retreat.”

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammed Habibu Tijani acknowledged the commendation saying government’s quick response to the pandemic was crucial.

“The commendations are justified compared with other countries. If you look at other countries you will realise that the measures put in place are fantastic in terms of testing and we even put in pro-poor measures.”

Mr. Tijani called for the establishment and sustenance of strong networks between member states to foster unity and development in the sub-region.
