Seventy farmer groups registered under PFJ programme

Seventy (70), farmers’ groups comprising 432 males and 269 females have been registered to take part in the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJs) at Effia-Kwesimintsim aimed at increasing food production in the area.

The Chief Executive of the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly, (EKMA), Kojo Acquah who disclosed this, said 209.79 hectares of land had been cultivated mainly for maize, pepper, tomatoes, cabbage, garden eggs, okro and cucumber in Assakae, Mpatado, Whindo, Effia and Adientem.

Mr. Acquah was speaking at the maiden edition of the Meet-the-press series at Effiakuma in Takoradi last Thursday to provide an update on government’s flagship programmes and projects in the municipality, and also launch the 2019 referendum which takes place on December  17, this year.

He said it was the mission of the assembly to mobilise all available resources and utilise them effectively and efficiently to improve quality of life of the people through equitable provision of socio-economic services.

Mr. Aquah said, as at March 31, this year, EKMA had distributed seeds for legumes, cereals, root crops and tubers to farmers.

Adding that similarly, under the Planting for Rural Development and Export (PERD) programme, out of the 400 farmers targeted, 165 were cultivating coconut and palm oil on 571 hectares of land offered by the chief of Assakae.

Under the One-District-One-Factory, (1DIF) programme, he said Good News Ghana Limited based at Kwesimintsim, had projected to produce natural fruit juice.

The MCE said four 10-seater toilets projects were also ongoing in Assakae, East Tanokrom, Kwesimintsim, Sofo and Sabon Zongos respectively through the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme, (IPEP) under the One-Million-One-Constituency Policy.

“As part of the overall efforts to  improve urban management and provision  of urban services  in cities and towns, government has designed the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCSP), an initiative supported by International Development Agency  with  credit of $100 million from the world Bank to be implemented  over  a period  of five years  (2019-2020),” he said.

Under GSCSP, a new storm drain was being constructed at Effiakuma Number One, he said.

On health, he said, the construction of Community Health Base Improvement Services (CHPS) compounds at Apremdo and Kwesimintsim Sabon Zongo had been completed with funding from the Centre for Disease Control, while the furnishing of the Anaji Health Centre had also been completed.

“We are determined to improve the social and economic conditions of the people of Effiakuma and Kwesimintsim municipality. With a dynamic, dedicated and youthful team we are, indeed, poised to achieve our vision to become a vibrant local democracy that promotes effective, transparent and proactive delivery of services as well as a spatial infrastructure development,” the MCE said.
