Two people have died and eight others were injured in a road crash at Dompoase near Komenda on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway on Friday, July 31, 2026.

The accident involved a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle with registration number AS 6145-24 and a broken-down truck.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at the Komenda Fire Station responded to the emergency after receiving a distress call at about 6:55 p.m. They arrived at the scene approximately 15 minutes later.

According to the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II) Abdul Wasiu Hudu, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another, who had been trapped inside the wreckage of the Toyota Hiace, was rescued by firefighters but later died, raising the death toll to two.

Preliminary investigations indicate that 10 people were travelling in the commercial vehicle when the crash occurred.

Eight passengers sustained various degrees of injury, with three reported to be in critical condition. Personnel from the National Ambulance Service transported the injured to the Elmina Polyclinic for medical treatment.

Initial findings suggest that the accident occurred after an unidentified vehicle travelling from Takoradi towards Cape Coast allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle.

To avoid a head-on collision, the driver of the Toyota Hiace, which was travelling in the opposite direction from Cape Coast towards Takoradi, reportedly swerved and crashed into a stationary truck with registration number GN 2491-14 that had broken down along the roadside.

The force of the impact left one passenger trapped inside the mangled vehicle until firefighters carried out a rescue operation, while another occupant died instantly.

Police are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
